“What do you do for a living?” is a common greeting sentence in Asia countries, or at least in Hong Kong. To be honest, I didn’t have the confidence to tell people I am an illustrator until one year ago. The main reason for that is unstable income and people don't treat an illustrator as a proper job. People who are not in the illustration industry do not know or understand how the industry works, which makes total sense. I get it so I always try my best to describe and elaborate to them, illustrators are not starving artists.
The most annoying thing to me is - people who do not listen ( like the comics above). I was easily irritated few years ago but I get used to it now. Fake a smile, wish them have a nice day and walk away. You might think I am a bit mean but the truth is, the more you talk to these people, the less confident you are. You will then have less faith in yourself, hide yourself under the blanket and cry like a baby.
What happen if you use a peeler to peel off all the skin of a carrot?
Yup, the peeled carrot will be all over the chopping board. Imagine you are the carrot, Those people are basically, the peeler. The conversation with them will destroy you and you, the poor carrot, will be all over the place. We do not need these peelers in our lives. Don’t you know carrot skin is edible?
So next time, when you realise the person you are talking to is a peeler, head up and be a proud carrot.
Podcast I listened this week -
“You are what you do, not what you get paid you do.”
Avoid those peelers!
