Does anyone have the same problem as me? I never manage to finish “a grown-up book”. Grown-up book I mean book with awesome, well-designed cover and yes, 50,0000000000 words inside. I love reading but I can never finish a grown-up book, I just cannot. I used to feel ashamed about this. Having a grown-up book (the thicker the better)in my hands shows that I am smart, knowledgable, highly educated and….. cool as a cucumber. I thought.
Few years ago, I randomly picked up a picture book and read. Since then, I have started to fill my shelf with picture books, picture books and MORE PICTURE BOOKS. I am a visual person and I prefer looking at pictures than purely words. Picture books make me feel happy, silly, emotional and most importantly, they makes me feel like a kid again. The simplicity of the storylines allows space for imagination, as well as reflection and self-awareness. It might only take you 4-5 minutes to read the whole thing (I usually spend 15-20 minutes because I love hunting all those hidden treasure in the pictures. They are just joyful to look at! ) but the stories, the images and the messages can stay for days, months, or even years. To me, a picture book is as powerful as a therapy session(and it’s a lot more affordable!).
6 Picture Books I Have Read For More Than 20 Times -
When I Am Big by Maria Dek
A counting book I wish I had when I was a kid. Simple in content but full of exploration and imagination. And I always love Maria’s illustration especially her colour palette.
The Snow Lion by Jim Helmore and Richard Jones
As an introvert, I resonate with Caro( main character in the story) so much even I’m a grown-up. This story is about the challenges a kid, or even adult, will face when moving to a new place, or stepping in your discomfort zone.
Home by
Carson explores different homes in the book with stunning illustrations. And the book ends with two simple yet complicated questions - Where is your home? Where are you? I spent a lot of time exploring my thoughts and my life after reading this book for the first time. And this is also why I have read this book for more than 20 times.
The Cave by Rob Hodgson
I was introduced to this book by my 2-year-old niece and I enjoyed it as much as her! I laughed out really LOUD with the surprise at the end of the story. Such a treat!
I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. The illustrations and every page turn are so well planned that it feels like you are watching a movie instead of still images.
What Feelings Do When No One’s Looking by Tina Oziewicz & Aleksandra Zając
I found this book in a indie bookstore and I just cannot get my eyes off the illustrations. The makers humanised and visualised different feelings as heart-warming creatures. This books allows me to understand my own emotions more than any self-help books out there.
If you cannot afford to go to a therapist, get a picture book.
Do you have any picture books or grown-up books that you have read for more than once?
