I appreciate the insight into your sketching process. I hadn't ever really thought about practice drawing before drawing without looking at a reference...I can totally see that it would give space for style and play. So helpful. Thanks!

So nice to read about your drawing process Amber, thank you for sharing! I'm not an illustrator but love to read how illustrators, or creatives in general, work, inspires me a lot 😊

Thank you for the detailed description of your steps for creating a finished drawing for an illustration. Very interesting, informative, and helpful. I am just curious regarding what pencil you use in Procreate for the drawing stage?

I'm glad that you find it helpful Pamela! :)

For drawing stage, I normally use 6B pencil in Procreate. But I sometime use ink wash brush in thumbnails stage as I find it easier to figure out the composition with thicker brushes.

Amber, this is a sweet illustration and tutorial. I too create my illustrations digitally. I love the ease and speed of the undo button. Lately I’m forcing myself to go back to old school methods of drawing and painting in sketchbooks for the 3 materials drawing challenge. I see you are too. It’s taking a bit of getting use to (vs Procreate). I’m experimenting with a lot of various materials. Are you finding it challenging?

Thank you Maggie:) Ahhhh I know exactly how you feel! Drawing on paper is totally different from drawing on glass. I struggled to draw on sketchbook for more than a year. I forced myself to do it anyway, and experimenting with different materials like what you are doing. I finally have found a way that works for me. It's just the matter of time. We have to be patient to ourselves! Yes, I find it challenging especially colour combinations (with limited materials) but I think it's a great chance for me to learn more about myself. I know I will gain something no matter how ugly the paintings are!

I agree Amber. I’ve always loved my sketches on paper before I apply other mediums to them. Doing a challenge going straight to another medium is challenging. But it’s as you say a learning opportunity. Having fun even if the turn out ugly. 🤣
